Mason’s Scholarship Story
A Calling to Care
From an early age, Mason McCallum knew he wanted to pursue a profession through which he could help others in a profound way. Then, one summer experience solidified that decision.
McCallum, a freshman chemistry major and recipient of the Ann & Clarence Cazalot Jr. College of Science Undergraduate Scholarship, spent last summer as a camp counselor at MedCamps of Louisiana, a residential camping experience for children living with special needs.
“The plethora of kids we were able to help and just see them enjoy their life so much was really good to see,” McCallum said. “Before that, I had never imagined wanting to work with kids. It was eye opening because I was born three months early and could see what my life may have been. I don’t know what route I want to go yet, but I know I definitely want to work with kids.”
Even as a new college student, McCallum is familiar with the medical world. Not only does he come from a family of medical professionals, but the pre-med student also shared how his own experiences have influenced his desire to pursue a career in caring for others.
“Childhood cancer has always been something heavy on my heart. I’ve had a lot of friends pass away from cancer, some family members pass away from cancer,” he said.
“This scholarship really allows me to pursue my future in medicine. My future at LSU wasn’t cemented before receiving the scholarship, and because of the many opportunities that LSU is going to give me in my premed career – in my future in medicine – that really speaks about what [the Cazalots’] gift is really doing.”
McCallum said more than anything, he is thankful for the Cazalots’ support. “They’ve invested in my future education, and I’m not going to let them down.”
After receiving his scholarship, McCallum felt inspired to learn more about the donors behind the gift. It was then that he realized Clarence Cazalot serves as vice chair M.D. Anderson Cancer Center’s Board of Visitors. He shared, “I could just tell that this story resonated with mine.”
“LSU students are our next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers,” said Becca Thompson, associate vice president for enrollment management and student success.
“Scholarships empower students to achieve their goals by alleviating financial burdens, allowing students to focus on their studies and reach their full potential. Investing in these students creates a pipeline of talented individuals who will continue to positively impact our society.”
“Our data tells us financial wellness is a growing indicator for whether a student will be retained and ultimately graduate from LSU,” Thompson continued. “A student’s path toward graduation is often not a straight line. By receiving a scholarship, it validates a student’s place here at LSU and the support we are willing to provide. It can also motivate a student to continue on their journey, providing fuel for them to succeed at the highest levels.”
