Mr. Ara Arman

Ara Arman was born in Istanbul, Turkey on September 12, 1930 and resided in Baton Rouge, LA until he passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 95.

Ara earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey and his Master of Science from the University of Texas, both in Civil Engineering.

Ara had a very successful and fulfilling career as a professional Civil/Geotechnical Engineer with over 50 years of experience in the field of environmental, civil, geotechnical, foundations, and geosynthetics engineering. He began his career in 1956 at the Louisiana Department of Highways. In 1963 he began his teaching career in Civil Engineering at LSU. While employed at LSU he served in many capacities including: Professor, Assistant Director at the Division of Engineering Research, Chairman of the Department of Engineering, and Associate Dean of Civil Engineering for Instruction and Undergraduate Studies. In 1987 he served as the founder and director of the Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC). After retiring from LTRC he began his career in consulting, serving as a Sr. Geotechnical Consultant, Vice President and Principal at Woodward-Clyde Consultants. After leaving Woodward Clyde he became a Sr. Vice President and Executive Vice President at Gulf Engineers and Consultants.

Ara was a member and officer of many national and international professional and honorary engineering organizations. He initiated, chaired and presented at many and varied short courses and conferences throughout his life. He has in excess of seventy publications in the field of geotechnical engineering, foundation design and chemical stabilization of soils. They have been published and cited in technical journals and books in several countries including the USA, Great Britain, France, Turkey, Switzerland, Sweden, the former USSR, Germany, and Japan.

Ara was a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was the recipient of the prestigious A.E. Wilder, Jr. Award for Outstanding Service from the American Consulting Engineers Council. In 2001, he was inducted into LSU College of Engineering Hall of Distinction for his significant contributions to the field of civil engineering.

Though he has attained much success in his professional career, his passion was teaching and mentoring his students. His greatest professional achievement was seeing his students succeed in their personal lives and careers. His guidance and dedication to his students left a lasting impression and extended far beyond the walls of his classroom.
