The Snowball Effect: Scholarships Catalyze Opportunity

There are few things “more South Louisiana” than a snowball on a hot September afternoon. Add in dozens of LSU scholarship recipients, Mike the Tiger, and a shared sense of gratitude … and you have the heart of the LSU Foundation’s Snowball Effect.

The first-time event gave students a chance to enjoy a Ninja Snowball, connect with fellow Tigers, and hand-write short thank you messages for the donors who helped make their LSU story possible. The goal was to connect a fun campus moment with donor impact: A scholarship gift creates a snowball effect seen in the choices, confidence, and opportunities that shape a student’s LSU experience. 

At LSU, that momentum is measurable. The university enrolls tens of thousands of students each year, with more than 41,000 students currently enrolled for fall 2026 alone. Most students receive some form of scholarships or financial aid. 

“My parents didn’t get to go to college until much later down the line, until they were in their late 30s, early 40s,” said Sydnee, a finance major and scholarship recipient. “For me and my sisters, they always really made college very important. Education was the forefront of everything for us, so being able to afford college, live comfortably, and be able to focus on my studies has made so much of a difference in my life.”

For Sydnee, scholarship support has made space for curiosity and career exploration. As she begins more advanced finance coursework, she said her interest in cryptocurrency and the stock market is giving her a clearer sense of where her LSU education could take her next.

Donor support can create a chain reaction. A gift can cover part — or all — of a tuition bill, but its impact often reaches further: a student may work fewer hours, allowing them to take on a campus leadership role, accept an unpaid or lower-paid experiential education opportunity, conduct research, study abroad, or simply have more time to stay on track academically. Those choices can shape a semester, a degree path, and, eventually, a career.

“This scholarship has definitely helped me continue my studies with a little less financial burden,” said Nala, another scholarship recipient. “This school year, I’m very excited about going into more of my major-specific classes and being back on campus with my friends, meeting new people, networking, and doing events like this.”

For Nala, a mechanical engineering student with a dream of designing roller coasters, scholarship support reinforced her confidence in a challenging field. “It’s hard, but what isn’t? [When I received my scholarship,] I was like, ‘OK, this is what I’m supposed to do. This is where I’m supposed to be.’”

That is the snowball effect. 

Donor-funded scholarships begin with generosity, then move through classrooms, labs, student organizations, internships, service opportunities, and the communities worldwide that our graduates go on to serve.

“Scholarships are a powerful expression of belief in our students — not just who they are today, but who we know they will become,” said Krista Raney, president and CEO of the LSU Foundation. “We are grateful to the donors whose generosity opens doors for LSU students and strengthens their futures.”
