Why did you choose to attend LSU?
Baton Rouge has long been a second home to my family and me. My parents lived here
for over a decade before I was born, and we frequently visited Baton Rouge throughout
my childhood. However, the best of these trips was Scholars Weekend, where the extraordinary
students and faculty welcomed me and I learned about the wealth of opportunities available
to me at LSU.
What extracurricular programs are you involved in?
Attending LSU has helped me grow in a variety of ways outside of the classroom. I
have been able to continue hobbies I love, such as running, with Happy’s Running Club
in downtown Baton Rouge. Professionally, I am gaining valuable experience working
in the Newcomer Biochemistry Research Lab, where we investigate the structure and
function of 5-Lipoxygenase enzymes. Lastly, I am a member of LSU’s chapter of Global
Water Brigades, which provides hurricane relief locally and helps to implement clean
water systems in developing countries. I am excited to connect with these communities
through service.
What does receiving the Stamps Scholarship mean to you and your family?
Being a Stamps Scholar at LSU is a tremendous honor. As my family has strong roots
in Baton Rouge, receiving this honor here feels like things have come full circle.
I am very thankful for this opportunity, and I will use it to prepare myself to better
people’s lives through medicine.
How have you used, or how do you intend to use, your Stamps Scholar enrichment funds?
I am planning to use some of my funds to study abroad next summer in the Galapagos
Islands taking an evolution course where Charles Darwin came up with foundational
principles of the subject.
What are your future career aspirations?
My current career goal is to become an orthopedist specializing in sports medicine.
My history as an athlete throughout high school directed me towards this career choice.
I noticed that there was a stark disparity in access to healthcare among athletes
from lower income areas, and I want to dedicate my career to reducing this disparity
by starting a practice in an underserved community.
