What does receiving the Stamps Scholarship mean to you and your family?
Receiving the Stamps Scholarship has been arguably one of the best things that has ever happened to me. As a low-income student from a single parent household, being able to pursue my education without any financial burden is the biggest blessing I could have asked for. I have been able to truly get the college experience, able to do things I never would have thought I’d be able to, such as living on campus. I am extremely blessed and grateful for all the opportunities Stamps has and will continue to provide me.

How has your enrollment in the Ogden Honors College enhanced your LSU experience?
Because LSU is such a large institution with over 30,000 students, it’s really nice having a cozy, smaller “college within a college” and having a specialized group of advisors always in your corner. Beyond that, being in the Honors College has kept me from becoming complacent with my entry level courses by still holding me to a level of academic rigor. Outside of the classroom, it is also nice being surrounded by a community of likeminded, intellectual peers.

What are your future career aspirations?
My current career plan is to attend medical school and become a doctor, namely either oncology or psychiatry. One of my biggest goals in the medical field is to transform the way the public and physicians look at health—not treating patients solely using their symptoms, but also by analyzing and understanding other external factors, such as socioeconomics, that may explain why certain demographics tend to be targeted more. I hope to use my authority as a doctor to advocate for universal healthcare and close the disparity of unequal treatment for people of color in a white- and male-dominated field.

Tell me about a fellow Stamps Scholar who has made a difference at your time here at LSU.
Early on in my first semester, I had to pick up a shirt from resident “Stamps Mom” Lucy Simon. I was planning just to drop in and go, but we started talking about college and all my apprehensions just started slipping out. As a former gifted kid frequently suffering from imposter syndrome, Lucy really reassured me that I earned my spot at the table and that I deserved to be here. It’s nice to know her door (as well as many others) is always open!
